Response to Paige

I am a firm believer in alternative medicine for the sole purpose of a healthier lifestyle and relying on myself instead a cluster of chemicals that's supposed to "help me". The phrase "laughter is the best medicine" really can make a turnaround in one's mental state helping your overall health mentally and physically. Your thought pathways can enable you to feel the range of extremes (good or bad) in order to help or hurt you. Our brain is magnificent in its ability to attempt to heal the body without the use of any medication. Bringing in laughter to equation gives a more positive energy creating a more healthy environment within our own body. Freud added that we can use humor and laughter to help us get over harder events or happenings. Allowing us to relieve stress and chaos through laughter enables us to cope in certain situations, which usually can help the poor mental state you were once in.

  1. Great post, Alex! It was interesting to learn more about the effects of laughter on mental health. I also agree that laughter is a natural reaction to cope with stressful situations--it also seems to be the most productive initial reaction, as opposed to anger, in response to events that are out of our control because it's not harmful to others.

  2. I loved your post and I think that laughter is a great stress reliever and can be used as an alternative medicine too. People are so used to just using chemicals and pills to help us feel better, but maybe laughter is really all we need!

  3. I wonder how we could connect relief theory with an actual theory of comedy as medical relief--maybe there are specific kinds of comedy that are more therapeutic than others.

  4. I wonder if there are situations in which laughter can degrade one's mental health state... For example, if we laugh because of the superiority theory, maybe we feel a bit of unconscious guilt at our laughter at the expense of another person? In the same way that medicine can be helpful or harmful, maybe natural remedies, like laughter, can be harmful sometimes as well.

    1. Yes, I have done some research and there are studies shown that there can be unhealthy humor hurting one's mental state. It's definitely a two way street, but when used correctly, it can make a positive difference.

  5. I agree! Alternatives to actual medication is always a great option because regardless of the positive affects drugs have on the body there are always negative affects too!

  6. I love this post! Laughter certainly is a great "medical" solution to many of our problems. Our brain is definitely trying to fix anything that is wrong with our body, so if we bring in endorphins, we are just giving our body more energy.
